National flag of Austria
Austrian flag description
The Austrian flag is one of the oldest national flag designs in the world. The flag has three equal horizontal
bands of red, white, and red. The flag was adopted on May 1, 1945. This red and white striped flag is
one of the oldest national flags in Europe and has been used in Austria at least since the year 1191.
Origin of the Austrian flag
The red and white colors in the Austrian flag are taken from a legend of the Battle of Ptolemais (Acre) in 1191
in the Holy Land. Duke Leopold V of Austria was supposedly granted these arms by King Henry VI, based on the battle-bloodied tunic
of the duke, which had remained white only under his sword belt. He then chose these colors and pattern for his flag.
